Choosing the right resin system for your application

Fibre gives a wound part its strength; resin decides how it behaves in the real world, thermally, chemically and electrically.

The resin’s job

The matrix binds the fibres, transfers load between them and protects them from the environment. Two parts with identical fibre and wind angle can behave very differently depending on the resin, so the resin choice is an engineering decision, not a default.

Epoxy

The standard for mechanical and thermal performance. Epoxy offers the best all-round balance of strength, toughness and temperature capability, and is the default for structural and pressure parts.

Polyester and vinyl ester

When chemical resistance is the priority, polyester is cost-effective and robust. Vinyl ester steps up chemical resistance further while recovering much of epoxy’s mechanical performance, a common choice for aggressive process and water-treatment service.

Custom formulations

For specific thermal, electrical or environmental requirements we formulate the resin system to suit, and resins can be dyed for identification or branding. The point is that resin is a lever we control in-house, alongside fibre and wind angle.
